i found it amazing being raised in the witnesses to see exactly who got appointed sometimes as an elder.
it seemed that the criteria in my opinion had more to do with getting 10 hours a month in field service, answering at meetings, carrying microphones as a ministerial servant, or handling the magazine or literature counter !
in doing these " functions " and attending meetings on a regular basis - a man was thought to be considered " spiritually strong " and qualify to be an elder and serve on judicial committees judging people's personal problems.
"It's not what you know or what you do, it's who you know and what THEY do"
I heard this years ago, ..
The good old boys club personified .
When jeff renfroe from Crystal lake, Illinois was appointed an elder I was speechless, this statement literally jumped off of the platform and hit me across the face.
He is without any doubt the most headstrong, immature person I ever met, and yet he waltzes into the congregation,
( He couldn't become an elder from wherever he started,,,, never heard the whole story)
becomes business partners with dave redmond the PO and the next co visit this guy was appointed an elder.
Even now I hear stories about how his actions literally drive people away from the hall, and how the young people are learning very quickly how to lose respect for the elder arrangement.
If God was really watching over the jw's this guy would not even be able to handle the microphones,
( and this is not just entirely my opinion, young people from the hall have been sharing stories with my non jw boys regarding this "spiritual train wreck of a man")
most of us here know what a hypocritical, backstabbing bunch of gossips many of the jw's tend to be.
far too often, a jw wont tell you to your face what's eating them, but they'll sure tell others.
when i started waking up (the second time around) this made me very paranoid.
when I was a teenager, most of the witness kids were real party - people. I went along, but actually had a very hard time adjusting to this way of life.
I was raised Catholic, and I was quite a homebody who was quite boring I worked, went to school and the meetings.
One time many of the kids were caught by the elders (I don't remember why).
And when all of my so called "friends" got nailed, they just ignored me totally, at schoo/hall/service because I was not included in the group who was caught.
It may not have been a rumour, but as a teenager it was like salt in a wound for a long time
a lady i work with recently lost her husband to brain cancer, she is a very nice person so i made it a point to attend his memorial.
mass at the local evangelical church.. as the service went on, the pastor had asked the man's son, brother, and two sisters to give a little speech about their father, and brother.. it was one of the most emotional things i ever witnessed at a funeral.. .
remember, most of these people are from a different religion, or don't have any belief at all.. the brother gave a very nice talk about growing up together, one sister just stuck to her written script, it was very hard for her to speak in public.. the other sister read a letter that she started when her brother discovered that he had cancer, so her letter covered events for two years.. she started crying several times when something she was reading struck her, yet she was able to laugh, and get the entire church to laugh along with one of her personal observations regarding her brother as he grew up.. the most emotional part was when his 23 year old son got up and read a tribute that he wrote to his dad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.

there wasn't a dry eye in the entire church, plus he was crying as he read it.
As I drove home I just reflected on what I had experienced.
A witness for 35 years, only once did I see anyone really cry at a funeral. Never did I see a genuine outpouring of feeling, emotion, or anyone from a different religion actually sharing their feelings at the kh. Everything was always "scripted" and stayed within certain boundaries.
Yet I felt that the emotion, shared feelings, and actual crying in public was more theraputic to the family than a canned "theocratic" talk could ever be.
It's experiences like this that solidify the fact to me that the jw religion actually surpresses basic human feelings.
I'm in a sort of contemplative mood, but has anyone else ever noticed how different and good it is to branch out and experience other spiritual beliefs outside of the wtbts control ?
this video was sent to me earlier today, and it really hit a nerve with me,,,,, i just couldn't stop applying it to the witness belief of df and da.. i've known quite a few witness parents over the years who just left their kids "on the roadside" because they no longer.
wanted to be a part of this religion.. why is it that genuine human reaction/emotion is dropped when children no longer want to be a jw ?.
this father seems to be quite a guy, notice how he yells at the security/medical person near the end no doubt to leave his son alone !.

it is incredible the amount of scaremongering that jw's carry out.. this was one that always plagued me when i was still trying to grasp onto my beliefs as a jw.. either in wt study or in private discussion, this topic would come up.. what a horendous outlook of the future.
to be in absolute fear that the authorities might take your children away from you.
that you might suffer torture.
i remember a 'sister' coming up to me and telling me off for being on the atkins diet, as it was satanic and designed by satan.. chukky.
To my wife :
The Co's wife was talking in a cargroup about unbelieving family members, and my wife piped up and said that there were no jw's
on her side of the family.
mrs. co came back with,,, "well you had better get busy and start preaching more heavily to them, otherwise they are all going to die at armageddon".
wonderful lady,
i just got the "come be my follower" book and am shocked at their illustration on page 186. maybe i'm more shocked that at one time i would have accepted this warped reasoning.. first they quote jesus at matt.
7:21-23: "'lord, lord, did we not...perform many powerful works in your name?
' and yet then i will confess to them: i never knew you!
this illustration was created only to defend themselves
I like the good samaritan post, it completely nullifies the wt position.
we know of numerous instances when the borg goes after 'apostate" inspired quoting of their own materials.. looks like they are bitchy about the ones with good intentions too.
didn't they want the message to be preached "all over the inhabited earth"?.

not trying to hijack this thread, but I remember working construction with the witnesses back in the mid 80's right after I got married.
No insurance, living life day- to-day, planning on pioneering.
Working a large job on a neighboring PO's company crew, ,, one day he decided to take all of us to go work on a quick build, no asking he just does it.
1.5 hour ride each way to get there, I was 24 yrs. old with a wife and newborn son.
Later I discovered that the day was volunteered time,,, never even asked us if we could afford it. He just took us out there and expected us to
"put God first"
I was such a damn pushover back then for things pertaining to the so called truth
